Plot: Follow the hysterical adventures of Charlotte and George Hay, an
acting couple on tour in Buffalo in 1953 performing Cyrano de Bergerac and
Noel Coward’s Private Lives in repertory. At times, they perform both at
once! Their daughter visits to introduce her naïve fiancé to her whacky
parents just as George learns that his flirtation with a young woman in the
company went too far – and she’s pregnant! Charlotte considers leaving
George for their stately lawyer, Richard, while George realizes that
Charlotte is his one true love. All mayhem breaks out when director Frank
Capra calls to say he’s enroute to the theater to watch their matinee
because he’s considering casting George (and perhaps Charlotte) in his
newest show! As Samuel French notes, “Hilarious misunderstandings pile on
madcap misadventures, in this valentine to Theatre Hams everywhere.”

Characters:

George Hay (Male, 50’s-60’s): George and Charlotte lead their own touring
theater company and very much like to be the center of attention. George
plays all the male leads on the touring circuit from Cyrano to Shakespeare.
He dreams of being a star. George is a bit too fond of the young ladies but
he is deeply remorseful when he crosses the line and hurts his only true
love, Charlotte. The role requires strong physical comedy including
pratfalls, stage combat, chase sequences, and more.

Charlotte Hay (Female, 50’s-60’s): As noted above, Charlotte runs a touring
theater company with her husband, George. She plays all the famous female
leads and also has dreams of being a star! She tolerates George’s
philandering but is tiring of it and considers leaving him. She reaches the
end of her rope with him when he seems to blow their one big chance to
become stars. The role requires physical comedy including stage combat,
chase sequences, and more. It also requires the ability to do an upper-class
British accent for some scenes.

Ethel (Female, late 60’s-70’s): Ethel is Charlotte's mother and is also an
actress. Although she is hard of hearing, she is very witty and has a dry
sense of humor. She loves her daughter but is not a big fan of her
son-in-law, George. The role requires some limited physical comedy.

Rosalind Hay (Female, 20’s-30’s): Rosalind is George and Charlotte’s
daughter. She used to be an actress and a member of her parents’ theater
company but decided that she wanted a more stable career. She left “the
business” and has made every effort to never return to the stage again. She
brings her new fiancé, Howard, to the theater to meet her parents but finds
herself still reluctantly drawn to Paul, an actor in her parents’ theater
company. The role requires some physical comedy and the ability to do an
upper-class British accent for some scenes.

Howard (Male, late 20’s-early 30’s): Howard is Rosalind's fiancé. He is a TV
weatherman and is a bit of a theater buff. He’s a great fan of George and
Charlotte’s acting – or at least he tries to be! He’s a meek and mild kind
of guy who seems nervous and insecure until the end of the play when he
discovers his soul mate, Eileen, and finds his own inner confidence. The
role requires strong physical comedy.

Eileen (Female, 20's): Eileen is an aspiring actress and member of the
theater company. She has a crush on George and has been having a fling with
him. She is a bit manipulative although she can come across as ungrounded
and naïve.

Paul (Male, 30’s): Paul is a member of the touring theater company and, in
addition to playing a range of roles, finds himself as company manager. He
and Rosalind were a couple but when she decided to quit acting and leave the
theater profession, they broke up. He still has strong feelings for her and
wants her back. Paul is the kind of guy who holds everyone else together in
the midst of craziness. He’s the practical one and has a good sense of
humor. The role requires strong physical comedy and the ability to do an
upper-class British accent for some scenes.

Richard (Male, 50's-60’s): Richard is George and Charlotte’s attorney. He’s
also been in love with Charlotte for a long time and constantly tries to get
her to leave George. He is wealthy, stable, practical and rather
conservative – the complete opposite of George.
