*SYNOPSIS & CHARACTER BREAK DOWN:*

* *

Set in September of 1937, in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, this
coming-of-age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish
American teenager. Eugene is a typical adolescent male, experiencing
puberty, sexual awakening, and a search for identity as he tries to deal
with his family; his older brother Stanley, his parents Kate and Jack, and
Kate's sister Blanche and her two daughters, Nora and Laurie, who come to
live there after their father's death.

Characters:

Eugene Morris Jerome, almost 15: Eugene is concerned about his family, and
about himself. Our narrator, he must be a very strong actor who can carry
the show.

Kate Jerome, about 40: Eugene's mother, a strong Jewish matriarch, her
concerns are those of mothers everywhere in that era – how to take care of
her family, raise her children, support her husband … and come to grips
with the relationship she has with her sister

Jack Jerome, about 40: Eugene's father, a very good man. His sense of duty
and honor, and his religious beliefs lead him to take in family who are
alone; but he worries about how to provide.

Stanley Jerome, 18½: Eugene's older brother; is unhappy working a factory
job. He struggles with the real-world consequences of doing the right thing

Blanche Morton, 38: Eugene's widowed aunt, she is not a strong woman. She
fears for her children, she feels guilty that Eugene and Kate have taken
them all in, but is hard pressed to see an alternative. She misses her
husband very much.

Laurie Morton, 13: Eugene's younger cousin is all adolescent female. She
has a heart flutter, which causes everyone to be gentle with her, which she
enjoys. She is the proverbial “little pitcher with big ears” – she knows
what’s going on with everyone … well, almost.

Nora Morton, 16½: Eugene's beautiful older cousin is the object of his
affection – or at least his fantasies. While she actually has a shot at
dancing on Broadway, she understands the difficulties this might bring the
family. She misses her father very much, and resents her mother’s weakness.
