Auditions for Albany Civic Theater's first show of the 2013-2014 season, Big Maggie by John B. Keane, directed by Chris Foster, will be held Tuesday, May 14 and Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Albany Civic Theater, 235 Second Avenue, Albany, NY, 462-1297, info at albanycivictheater.org.
 
Big Maggie runs August 30-September 15, 2013. Please note: this play opens on Labor Day weekend.
 
Sign-ins begin at 7pm both evenings and auditions begin at 7:30pm; there is no need to make an appointment. Auditions will be cold reads from the script; there is no need to prepare a monologue. Please attempt an Irish dialect.

Big Maggierevolves around the domineering mother of four grown children who are determined to go their own ways and likely headed in the wrong directions. Maggie's often-drunk, womanizing husband has died so she is now free to exercise some control over her life and her children, much to the consternation of the young people.
 
We are looking for 6 women, able to play ages 22-99, and 5 men, able to play ages 23-99.
 
Available roles:
 
Maggie Polpin(45-55) a widowed mother of four – living in rural Ireland, now sole owner of the family shop and farm. She a complex figure, far from the cliché’s of Irish femininity which preceded her. This is a hard-bitten, uncompromising woman who puts her personal security above all other concerns. 
 
Old Woman(oldish) an old gossip and busybody
 
Mrs. Madden(40-50) The mother of Maggie’s son’s potential suitor. 
 
Katie(24) Maggie’s eldest self-indulgent daughter whom Maggie forces into prosperous, respectable marriage, and whose sexual history comes back to haunt her.
 
Gert (22) Maggie’s youngest child and her Father’s favorite whom Maggie brutally disillusions when the girl falls for a glib traveling salesman.
 
Mary Madden(22)The unsuitable girl Maurice wants to marry
 
Old Man(oldish) an old gossip and busybody
 
Byrne(50-65) A stonemason – the one character whose caustic wit is a match for Maggie’s own.
 
Teddy Heelin(30-40) A lusty travelling salesman
 
Mick(25) Maggie’s eldest son, who has run the farm and who was promised a share of the business by his late father and eager to take what he feels he’s owed. He realizes his options are limited and he must either leave home or live under his mother’s control. He chooses the former.
 
Maurice(23) Maggie’s grudgingly compliant younger son who longs to get married to an unsuitable girl.
