Show Synopsis:
The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant
life in this delightful musical parable.
Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic
dreams. When he is sold into slavery by
his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures
in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. Joseph’s gift of interpreting dreams
eventually leads him to become Pharaoh’s number two. After testing his brothers integrity, Joseph
eventually reconciles with his brothers.
The show is a fast moving, fun musical which encompasses styles of Elvis,
country-western, calypso, bubble-gum pop, rock ‘n roll, French dirge, rap and
much more!
No roles are precast and the show provides an
opportunity to highlight and showcase many individuals and talents while still
creating an ensemble of people working together. Auditions are open to students currently in 8th-12th
grade. There will be a separate audition
for the kids chorus (2nd-7th grade) who are also featured
at points during the show.
Please bring a calendar of conflicts to the auditions. Call backs may be held if needed. Performances and rehearsals will take place
in Rexford, NY. To contact the director with questions or for audition information, please visit www.performingsmarts.com.
CHARACTERS:
Narrator
(female) – not of the time or place of the action. The Narrator(s) tell the story though word
and song, guiding the audience gently through the story of Joseph and his
brothers. This role may be divided up to
provide more opportunities for performers.
Joseph
(male) – his father’s obvious favorite.
He shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. Loveable, charming.
Jacob
(male) – the father of twelve sons, his favorite being Joseph. At times he may appear unfair or shallow, but
he is, more importantly, the prophet who recognizes the future calling of
Joseph.
Joseph’s
Eleven Brothers (male or female) – although
acting usually as a group, they each have their own different personalities,
talents, and flaws. As a group they sell
Joseph into slavery, but as individuals they deal with the following years and
how they can make amends. They sing and
dance their way through many situations and places. Several of the brothers
singing the lead in songs of varying styles.
A versatile group!
