Directed by Tom Heckert, assisted by Producer Kathy Frisic
-- Tuesday, January 8, and Thursday, January 10 -
The Schenectady Civic Players announce open auditions for the 4th production of its 85th season, Alan Ayckbourn's brilliant and biting black comedy, Woman in Mind , Tuesday and Thursday, January 8 and 10, at its Playhouse, 12 South Church St., in Schenectady's historic Stockade district. Sign-ups begin at 7:15 pm each evening, with readings starting at 7:30 p.m.
(Performance dates for Woman in Mind are March 15 through 24, 2013.)
Director Tom Heckert has outlined the following cast requirements for this eight- character play:
It is the story of Susan, a Vicar's wife unhappy with her life, who steps on a garden rake succeeding in whacking herself in the head - and into an imaginary world where her perfect family exists. As we follow Susan's journey, her real family and imaginary family become more and more intertwined until reality and fantasy occupy the same space.
This work is often considered the playwright's most autobiographical work, drawing inspiration from the women in his own life.
English accents are requested at auditions, but do not let that discourage anyone from auditioning.
Roles available:
5 men 3 women. Ages 20's to 50's.
Susan, 40s - 50s hit in the head at the start with a garden rake. A housewife who, in reality, is neglected by her husband, patronized by her sister-in-law, and estranged from her son. In her own imaginary world, by contrast, she is happy, successful, and loved by her perfect family.
Gerald, 40 - 50, Susan's real husband, a vicar whose interest in his wife has long since faded in favour of his book and undivided attention to his sister/
Muriel, 50s, live-in sister to Gerald, dead weight about the house, self-centered, and an unimaginably bad cook
Rick, 20s, Susan's real son, who joined a cult that forbids members to speak to their parents.
Bill Windsor, 30s 50s. Susan's doctor who has a greater fondness for Susan than one would expect. Bill is the only character that breeches both worlds.
Andy, 40s 50s Susan's imaginary husband, handsome, devoted, master cook, and everything missing from Gerald.
Tony, 30s - 40s Susan's imaginary young brother, devoted, mischievous.
Lucy, 20's Susan's imaginary daughter, beautiful, close, and, unlike Rick, shares every secret with her.
