                           character descriptions below for more
information about the play.

*The Story*: Sam Shepard’s classic comedy of two estranged and seemingly
different brothers locked into a self-destructive combat. The two are
reunited after five years at their mother’s home in California, being taken
care of by Austin, when the elder brother, Lee, a petty thief, breaks in
hoping to score big robbing homes in the neighborhood. When the two are
visited by Saul Kimmer, Austin’s agent, Lee steals his attention, finagling
a deal for his improvised Western, while Lee’s labored-over screenplay is
unceremoniously dropped, thrusting the play into verbal and physical
violence as the two fight for possession and control. When their mother
unexpectedly returns from her Alaskan cruise, she finds her two sons wasted
and at each other’s throats.

The two brothers represent the two sides of the American present: one
sophisticated, cultured, ambitious and successful; the other alienated and
outcast, raw, wild and violent. As the play unfolds, the two characters
exchange places and reveal that each is the double of the other.

*The Characters*:

Austin (20’s) – A “successful” young man with a family and a budding
screenwriting career, house-sitting for his mother, who is away on vacation

Lee (20’s) – A drunk, homeless petty thief, always looking for an angle to
make trouble and perhaps a little cash.

Saul Kimmer (30-70) – A Hollywood producer who presents a successful, “with
it” façade.

Mother (60’s & up) – Distracted, well-meaning, but too wrapped up in her
own senior plans to be of any use to her two sons.
