*CRIMES OF THE HEART* is Beth Henley’s comedy about the McGrath sisters,
and the way the family is drawn together on “…a bad day. A real bad day.”
The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three sisters are reunited
to give support to sister, Babe, who’s been charged with shooting her
husband. Lenny, the eldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing
diminishing marital prospects. Meg, the middle sister, who quickly
outgrew Hazlehurst,
is back after a failed singing career on the west coast. Babe, the
youngest sibling is out on bail after shooting her lawyer husband, Zachary,
in the stomach because “I just didn’t like his looks.”

Their grave, yet somehow hilarious troubles are highlighted by their
priggish cousin, Chick; by Barnett, the awkward young lawyer who tries to
keep Babe out of prison and by Meg’s old boyfriend, Doc. Winner of the
1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

*Casting 4 women and 2 men. All characters have a Southern dialect.*

*LENNY:* 30; the oldest sister and the one who has remained at home to care
for their Grandfather; still single; plain; low self-esteem but a loving,
warm, caring sibling.

*MEG:* 27; the sister who went off to L.A. to become famous but whose
dreams are still unfulfilled; attractive; spontaneous; still a flirt; likes
to stir things up.

*BABE: *24; the youngest sister and the one who creates the play’s drama
when she shoots her lawyer husband in the stomach because, as she says, “I
just didn’t like his looks”; perky; optimistic; affectionate; a bit naïve.

*CHICK BOYLE:* 25-35; Cousin to the McGrath sisters; lives next door; a
nosy busybody who thrives on gossip.

*DOC PORTER:* 30; Meg’s old boyfriend; laid back; warm; has a slightly
brooding attractiveness; honest; a nice guy.

*BARNETT LLOYD:* 27-30; a bright young lawyer; makes up in energy for what
he lacks in experience; might have a bit of a crush on Babe; very likable;
has a vendetta against Babe’s husband.
