Congregation Gates of Heaven is seeking a skilled pianist to help accompany worship. This is a 10 month a year part-time position; roughly September through June. The Congregation is a dynamic, creative Reform Jewish synagogue of approximately 400 families in Schenectady.
The job entails:
1. Accompany vocalist/student cantor for Shabbat evening services: 3 Friday nights a month from 7 pm to 8:15 pm
2. Accompany for all Saturday morning Bar/Bat Mitzvah services, approximately from 10:30 am to 12:30pm (15-25 services per year)
3. Rehearse and accompany professional quartet for High Holy Day services
4. Accompany congregation for High Holy Day services
5. Arrange for substitute accompanist when s/he is not available
6. Additional accompaniment as negotiated/agreed upon, i.e. funerals, weddings when music is requested. [If available]
In addition to piano skills, we are hoping to find someone who is able to:
1. Improvise piano accompaniment from “fake book” and chord charts
2. Transpose simple music with minimal preparation
3. Ability to sight read music
4. Work with multiple soloists with individual repertoires
5. Comfort with contemporary and classical styles
Salary is per service and is based on experience and market-scale. Position starts end of summer 2019.
