Synopsis: Based on the Academy Award-winning motion picture, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a play-within-a-play depicting how the young Will Shakespeare was inspired to write ROMEO & JULIET. Faced with writer’s block, Will gets advice from the likes of his tavern mates, producer, loan shark, Queen Elizabeth and rival Philip Marlowe. When Will falls in love with the beautiful Viola de Lesseps, disguised as a young actor to play Romeo, sparks fly, along with swords, witty dialogue, song, bawdy humor and all reason.

Note about music: There are many songs in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE that are performed by the entire cast. Actors should be confident singing – much like in a choir. Reading music a plus – experience in singing harmony important.

People with animal allergies please note: There is a dog in the cast of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Actors will come into contact with the dog on and backstage.

Seeking: 8 Non-Union Actors of all ages to create an ethnically, racially, sexually diverse ensemble. Actors play more than one part – and are part of the ensemble that sings, makes sound effects, etc.

Sam/Ensemble – Sam is the young man who plays Juliet – until his voice changes right before the show is scheduled to start

Frees/Wabash/Heavy 1/Ensemble – versatile actor, Wabash is a tailor who has a stammer off stage but not on stage, physically strong

Nurse/Ensemble – versatile comedienne, Viola’s nurse

Peter/Proteus/Ensemble – versatile actor with stage combat, dance or acrobatic experience

Nol/Valentine/Ensemble – versatile actor to play Henslowe’s assistant

Edmund Tilney/Sir Robert deLesseps/Ensemble** – versatile actor who is the Queen’s censor; also plays Viola’s father

John Webster/Ensemble – a bit of a weasel, sneaky and conniving, a young person who likes the sight of blood (went on to become the great playwright of gore, John Webster)

Ned Alleyn/Lambert/Ensemble** – versatile actor to play the famous leading man, Ned Alleyn. Conceited, confident – but knows a good play when he sees it – nobody’s fool. Stage combat required.

  *   1 minute memorized Shakespearean monologue from the play of your choice.
  *   Prepare a song (with no accompaniment) a folk song, hymn or madrigal.
  *   Please select something that shows off your voice.
  *   If you play guitar, lute or flute, please bring it along to play.

There is a modest weekly per diem provided to non-union actors to cover meal and travel expenses. Actors may enroll in the Equity Membership Candidate program; EMCs receive weekly work points.

HOUSING/TRANSPORTATION: Non-Union actors must have local housing and transportation to/from all rehearsals and performances.
