The project is an environmental-themed mockumentary set in small-town
upstate NY.

Synopsis: It’s 2030, and the environment has gone bonkers. Residents of a
small town in upstate New York gather to debate whether to accept another
influx of American climate refugees. It doesn’t go well. When the
children’s choir arrives to find that their elders have trashed Town Hall,
the youth must decide what to do with the mess.

Adult Roles

The Mayor, age 30-50, female or person of color preferred. A small-town
mayor on his/her way to the Presidency (in his/her mind). Friendly, glib,
tries but fails at modesty. Agonizes over the thin line between
business-casual when getting dressed each morning. Wants you to know how
smart he/she is.

First Grade Teacher, age 25-45, female, any ethnicity. Loves kids. Tries to
find the bright side of everything. Frequently catches herself getting sad,
then tells herself to smile.

PTA Parent, age 30-50, female, any ethnicity. Upper middle class. Married
up. Guided by small-town status. Takes pride in her appearance and
community activities and leadership positions. Wishes her kids and spouse
were more impressive. Has not found a problem that could not be solved by
organizing a local fundraiser.

Resident Man, age 40-75, male, any ethnicity. Retired or semi-retired.
Grumpy. Doesn’t understand why things can’t be like they used to be. Thinks
ironing is a waste of time. Doesn’t see why you can’t wear your favorite
clothes and lucky hat every day.

Resident Woman, age 40-75, female, any ethnicity. Resentful. Likes to troll
people online anonymously. Thinks new fashions look ridiculous. Rarely
insults people to their face.

Police Officer, age 25-70, any gender or ethnicity. Happy to have a job.
Likes watching TV. Laughs at other people’s jokes. Note voted anything in
high school yearbook. Often thinks of zingers he/she should have said.

Attorney, age 35-60, any gender, non-caucasian. Tough litigator. Loves to
win and watch opponents squirm and cry. Truly believes each client is
innocent, as long as the retainer check clears. Fashionable for a
small-town lawyer.

Hospital Communications Director, age 35-60, female, any ethnicity.
Sensibly well dressed. Calm. Thinks LinkedIn is interesting. Reluctant
social media user. Prefers traditional media, where her proper diction and
precise vocabulary truly stand out. Secretly annoyed that doctors and
nurses pay insufficient detail to their appearance and presentation. Unable
to communicate effectively in several foreign languages.

Kid Roles

Mia, age 10-11 (5th grade), female, any ethnicity. Elementary-school
fashionable. Super confident. Enjoys the perks of wealthy parents. Excels
at school and activities. Regularly updates her resume with an eye towards
early admission to Harvard and/or Broadway. Feels sorry for everyone else,
so tries to be nice to them, as long as it works out for her as well.
Uncomfortable around poor people and unattractive people.

Jayden, age 10-11 (5th grade), male, any ethnicity. Chip on his shoulder
about living in a trailer, being poor and his unmarried parents. Longs to
be seen as “normal” like other kids but frustrated he is not. Acts up in
school. Practical joker who loves to laugh. Loves animals. Smart but poor
grades because he can’t concentrate.

Brielle, age 10-11 (5th grade), female, any ethnicity. Quiet, shy.
Shell-shocked from losing her house to a hurricane and moving from middle
class to poor. Wants to be liked but feels like everyone will always see
her as the new, weird kid. Finds comfort in playing the piano, but now
mostly plays imaginary keys on her desk or lap and hears the music in her
head.

Lorenzo, age 10-11 (5th grade), male, any ethnicity. Friendly. Not that
bright. Loves to play sports, but doesn’t realize he is uncoordinated.
Surprised when people get mad at him for things he does and says that he
doesn’t realize would be offensive. Laughs at every joke, even when he
doesn’t understand them.

Shy First Grader, age 6-8, girl or boy, any ethnicity. Likes animals. Shy
but can talk to strangers when asked to by an authority figure.

Outgoing First Grader, age 6-8, girl or boy, any ethnicity. Likes animals.
Exuberant. Loves to tell jokes and stories.
