SEEKING ACTORS FOR HOW TO LIVE ON EARTH BY MJ KAUFMAN

The College of Saint Rose is currently seeking 2 actors to play the roles of Carol and Robert for our Spring production of How to Live on Earth directed by Vicki Hoskins. These characters are open to actors of all races, ethnicities, abilities, and body types. We are committed to building a cast community that is reflective of our diverse world. Trans and non-binary performers, BIPOC performers, and performers with disabilities are strongly encouraged to submit. Please see the plot synopsis and specific character descriptions below.

These actors will supplement our company of student actors. We are rehearsing over Zoom and will film the play in scenes via cellphone capture, Zoom, and other remote methods. The final product will be edited and then streamed in April. Actors do not need to be on site in order to participate (this is a digital theatrical production). Minimal commitment and flexible schedule. Unpaid. Please email the director at hoskinsv at strose.edu if you are interested. Thank you!

About the Play
The dream of space exploration, the thrill of interplanetary travel, and the honor of being among the first to settle another world…. these goals draw thousands of applicants to the controversial Mars One program. In the American Midwest, four people respond to the call for adventure: upbeat software engineer Omar, whose desire to leave the planet deeply hurts his loving partner; awkward Aggie, a college dropout, who feels like she doesn’t belong on earth; discontented librarian Eleanor, who wants to use her aptitude for organization in the service of a higher purpose; and Bill, an extreme sports enthusiast and Doctor Without Borders, whose qualifications are as impressive as his interpersonal skills are poor. As they move improbably upwards in the selection process, each of these people must grapple with grieving, angry family members, budding romances, and their own fears—of leaving and of staying. What does it mean to say goodbye forever? What does it mean to stay after you’ve already said goodbye?

Seeking actors to portray the following characters:
Robert: (40s-60s); Aggie’s father. His relationship with his daughter is tenuous and awkward following the divorce from Aggie’s mother. High-class, likes to eat at fancy restaurants, ambitious. The kind of person who feels you need to make a plan and then achieve it, but this attitude can come across as judgmental. Disappointed in what he views is a lack of drive in his daughter, but he ultimately loves her.
Carol: (40s-60s); Mother to Bill and Don. Bill is her overachiever son who is a finalist to go on the Mars mission; Don is her sweet and caring son who often feels he is overlooked because of his brother's achievements. Carol just wants to keep the peace between her children. Supportive of her children’s choices until Bill’s application becomes more real. Worried.
