*About the Show*:
*Once *follows Irish busker, Guy, as he prepares to give up on music after
his muse abandons him, and his fateful meeting with Girl, who inspires him
to follow his dream. A beautiful love story set to Irish folk music played
by the actors on stage. It shows us how even the most beautiful and
seemingly perfect love can be impacted by something as ordinary as timing.
*Characters*:
**Ages are suggestions, we encourage anyone 18 years of age or older to
audition!*
*Guy *(Age: 25 to 40, Vocal range: F#2 – G#4)
An Irish busker on the streets of Dublin. His muse broke his heart and left
him behind, and he is planning to give up his music. Stoic and clumsy in
person, his music reveals a soulful, deeply emotional, and talented
guitarist and songwriter. Plays guitar.
*Girl *(Age: 20 to 35, Vocal range: F#2 - B4)
A Czech immigrant to Dublin with her young daughter. A classically trained
pianist with a deep love of music. Blunt and honest about her opinions, she
is more guarded when it comes to her own feelings. Estranged from her
husband, she struggles with her feelings for Guy and her duty to family.
Plays piano.
*Billy *(Age: 30 to 50)
Irish music store owner who allows Girl to play piano in his shop because
she doesn’t have one. Boisterous, passionate, and over the top. Doesn’t
bother to hide his crush on Girl, though she doesn’t mind. Plays guitar.
*Reza *(Age: 20 to 35)
Girl’s vivacious and flirtatious Czech roommate. The relationship isn’t
made clear, but Reza acts like a sister towards girl. Plays violin.
*Baruska *(Age 45 to 60)
Girl’s mother. A strong, worn Czech woman who is more concerned for Girl’s
happiness than she is. No instrument required.
*Bank Manager *(Age: 30 to 50, Vocal range: G3 – B4)
A corporate suit with dreams of an artistic life, though not the best
songwriter. Waiting for any excuse to follow his dream. Plays guitar or
cello.
*Da* (Age: 50 to 70)
Guy’s father. A vacuum repairman. A sturdy, simple Irishman with a deep
love for his son. Supports Guy more than he realizes. No instrument
specified.
*Svec and Andrej *(Age: 20 to 40)
Girl’s Czech roommates. Quirky and loud. Learning English from Irish soap
operas. Maybe her brothers, she isn’t quite clear on that. Play guitar,
bass, and mandolin.
*Eamon *(Age: 30 to 50)
A Dublin music studio manager. Finds himself quietly impressed with Guy’s
work. Doubles as the Emcee of an open mic night Girl signs Guy up for.
Plays guitar and piano.
*Ex-Girlfriend *(Age: 20 to 40)
Guy’s ex-girlfriend who cheated on him and left for New York. She haunts
his old music and his budding feelings for girl. Plays violin.
*Ivonka *(Age: 6 to 10)
Girl’s young daughter. No instrument required.
*Schenectady Light Opera Company pledges to continue advocating for and
aiming to build a diverse cast reflective of the Schenectady community. Any
and all ethnicities, BIPOC actors and actors of all gender identities are
encouraged to audition for all roles.* And, whether or not you’ve been part
of past SLOC productions, we welcome you to audition!
If you have any questions, please contact the production team (
