*THE BOOK CLUB PLAY **BY KAREN ZACARÍAS *
*OPENS AT HUBBARD HALL CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND EDUCATION *
(Cambridge, NY February 22, 2017) Hubbard Hall, in partnership with
Battenkill Books, is thrilled to be producing Karen Zacarías’ hilarious *The
Book Club Play*, opening March 4 at Hubbard Hall’s Freight Depot Theater. Kirk
Jackson returns to the Hall to direct this hilarious piece after directing
the hit comedic opera *La Pizza con Funghi* last summer*. The Book Club*
play showcases talent new to the Hall with the casting of Megan Demarest,
Wade Simpson, Morgan Morse, and Oliver Wadsworth, while also bringing back
some Hubbard Hall favorites including Erin Ouellette, Catherine Seeley, and
Lia Russell-Self. Written by Karen Zacarías, the play focuses on the fun,
frivolity, and deeply serious politics found in our beloved Book Clubs.
When a new member is hastily invited into this Club, will this group of
friends ever be the same? Uproariously funny, this contemporary comedy lets
us celebrate our love for reading while allowing us to laugh at ourselves –
and our loved ones. Accompanied by opportunities for each audience to share
their favorite book titles, this play is a celebration of why we love to
love – and talk about – our books. A prolific playwright, Karen Zacarías
is also currently working on her hit musical *The Destiny of Desire* at the
Goodman Theater in Chicago, a piece commissioned by Hubbard Hall’s own
David Snider while he was still on staff at Arena Stage in Washington, DC,
where the musical had its world premiere in 2015. *The Book Club Play* was
premiered at the Berkshire Theater Festival in 2008 and has gone on to be
Ms. Zacarías’ most produced work throughout the U.S., for good reason.
“Karen and I have been close friends for over a decade and have worked on
many different plays and projects together over the years. Her history with
this piece and its evolution as a sharp, insightful, and touching comedy
are part of why I wanted to produce it here for our audiences,” said
Hubbard Hall Executive & Artistic Director David Snider. “It’s the rare
play that is at once both hilarious and heartfelt, and it reflects how much
we need to connect as human beings in today’s busy world. And how much
books are a respite for us and a chance to reflect on who we are and what
we want. I know audiences are going to love it.”
Performances of *The Book Club Play* will run Saturday, March 4th through
Sunday, March 19th, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and
Sundays at 2:00pm. Tickets are $25 General Admission/$10 Student. Members
of a local book club can call in to the box office to save $5 on General
Admission. All tickets are available online at hubbardhall.org or by
calling the box office at 518-677-2495 <(518)%20677-2495> Tuesdays and
Thursdays 10am to 5pm or Wednesdays and Fridays 11am to 4pm; performance
tickets are also available at-the-door if the show is not sold out. If you
cannot attend but would like to continue to support the work of the Hall,
please donate or sign up for the e-newsletter at hubbardhall.org, or like
