*Opera Saratoga’s “The Bremen Town Musicians”---March 4 *

SCHENECTADY – Children and families of all ages are invited to a free,
hour-long performance of Opera Saratoga’s “Opera to Go” production of *The
Bremen Town Musicians* (an adaption of the Brothers Grimm folk tale) at the
Schenectady Civic Playhouse, 12 So. Church Street, Schenectady, on
Saturday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m.  The performance  is underwritten by
Schenectady Civic Players’ Gwen E. Fraser Memorial Fund to give back to the
community and excite young people on the magic of the arts.

          Featuring the music of Offenbach, Rossini, Donizetti, and Verdi,
John Davies has adapted the beloved Brothers Grimm folk tale into a
delightful children’s opera. The donkey, General Boom, seeks to form a band
for the town of Bremen using the outcast farm animals as musicians.  It
doesn’t take long for them to discover that they have to consider each
other's feelings before they can make music. But, can the four very
different creatures band together before pirates steal their instruments?

          The story of four farm animals brought together by fate and
traveling with each other is very much in the tradition of beloved "journey
stories," including *The Wizard of Oz*, and the *Toy Story* movies.

          Through this adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale,
children become exposed to a rich variety of operatic music while exploring
the important themes of diversity and tolerance. Acceptance of others and
the value of cooperation are themes that are interwoven throughout the
Opera-to-Go performance. Appropriate for Pre-K to Grades 6.


A cookies and punch reception follows. Admission is free. Open seating. No
advance reservations. Just walk right in. 382-2081.
