GHENT, NY

November 7, 2014

The Ghent Playhouse will be holding auditions for Heroes, a bittersweet comedy based on the play, “Le Vent des Peupliers” by Gerald Sibleyras, translated by Tom Stoppard, and directed by Cathy Lee-Visscher. Roles for three men, 50’s – early 70’s.

AUDITIONS: Monday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 2, 2014 –
Sign-in at 7:00 p.m. at The Playhouse off Route 66 in Ghent, NY Columbia County

PERFORMANCES: January 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, February 1, 6, 7, and 8, 2015 – Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

THE STORY: Three World War I veterans pass their monotony-filled days in a French retirement home for soldiers, by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaigns, grumblings about the staff and reflections on their lives. Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom. Their cantankerous camaraderie becomes strained when Gustave conjures up a plan to escape.

HEROES: The action takes place in August of 1959 on the terrace
of a retirement home for soldiers in France

Characters: All are veterans of WWI

HENRI: Has been a resident of the home for 25 years. He is the jovial
optimist, a “glass half full” type of guy. He has a bad leg and
                        hobbles with a cane.

GUSTAVE: Has been a resident of the home for 6 months. A cranky, shell-
shocked, decorated vet. A boastful bully and bitter cynic. Has a
know-it-all façade that conceals his terror of the outside world

PHILIPPE: Has been a resident of the home for 10 years. A mildly paranoid
womanizer, who faints periodically because of shrapnel in his brain.
He is the amiable peacemaker of the group.

NOTE: The actors will use British accents. Accents are not required for auditions, although experience with accents will be helpful.
