The Ghent Playhouse announces an additional audition date for CABARET (1998
Version) - Music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb, Directed by Matthew
Teichner



*Date and Time:  *Thursday – January 25 2018

   7 pm - 9 pm



*Location*:  *St. James Church*; 117 Hudson Avenue; Chatham, NY (situated
on the corner of Routes 66 and 203 – across from Destino Mexican Restaurant)


 *Performance Dates:  *March 16 - April 1, 2018.   Performances are at 8 pm
Fridays & Saturdays and 2 pm Sundays.


*SYNOPSIS: * Set amid the backdrop of 1930’s Germany, a garish Master of
Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them that they will forget all
of their troubles at the Cabaret.  With his bawdy songs serving as wry
commentary, CABARET explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of
Berlin’s natives and expatriates, as Germany slowly yields to the emerging
Third Reich.



Tony Award-winner for Best Play in 1967 and again in 1998 for its revival.





*CHARACTERS:  *



*EMCEE – *Master of Ceremonies – The host at the decadent and vulgar
nightclub, The Kit Kat Club - Age range and appearance flexible.  Presented
as a gender-questionable character comfortable with being close to both men
and women - comedic and loveable –Speaks with a German accent.  *Requires
agile stage movement and dance – Vocal range:  Tenor; Middle C to High C# *



*SALLY BOWLES – *(20’s – 30’s)  A British Cabaret singer at the Kit Kat
Club.  A quirky character who comes across as flighty, yet at times
struggles with knowing the darkness of the reality of her life.  Speaks
with a British accent.

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance – Vocal Range:  Strong
Belt – Low A to High C*



*CLIFF BRADSHAW – *(Late 20’s – mid-30’s) – An American novelist and
English teacher traveling to Berlin.  Presented as a closeted gay man
exploring his sexuality.

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance  - Vocal Range: Tenor –
Low A to High E.*



*FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER – *(50+) – A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat.
  Speaks with a German accent

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance (waltz) – Vocal
Range:  Alto – Low D to Ab above middle C.*



*HERR SCHULTZ – *(50+) – One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the
proprietor of a fruit shop.  Speaks with a German accent

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance – Vocal Range:  Tenor –
Low C to High F.*



*FRAULEIN KOST – *(30’s – 40’s) – Another of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers.  She
earns money by offering favors to sailors – presentation of this character
should exhibit a strong sexual comfort and commanding nature.  Speaks with
a German accent.

*Comfortable with stage movement – Vocal Range:  Alto/Mezzo – Low A flat to
High F*



*ERNST LUDWIG – *Age range flexible.  Takes English lessons from Cloiff and
smuggles funds for the Nazi Party; a friendly and likeable German.  Speaks
with a German accent.

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance (waltz).  Vocal Range
flexible – sings in the chorus.*



*KIT KAT CLUB GIRLS  - *(20’s – early 30’s)  The individuals will also be
part of various scenes as performers and club patrons.  The ladies can be
of various shapes and sizes – the key is to be comfortable with your
femininity and scanty costumes that show off sex appeal.

*Features:  (“Two Ladies,” “Telephone Dance,” etc.) will be drawn from this
group*

*Strong Dance Skills Required  - Strong singing voices in all parts*



*MALE DANCE ENSEMBLE – *(20’s-early 30’s)  Kit Kat Club Waiters and Patrons
and various features.  Should be comfortable with portraying free in gender
depictions.

*Features:  (Bobby, Victor, “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” etc.) will be drawn
from this group*

*Strong Dance Skills Required – Strong singing voices in all parts*



*CHARACTER ROLES/SINGERS – *(Mid 30’s and older) – Club Patrons, Party
Guests and various features.

*Comfortable with stage movement and light dance  –* *Strong singing voices
in all  parts*







There will be both dance and vocal auditions for this show, so dress in
comfortable shoes and clothing.  Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Thursday
evenings from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 4:00 – 10:00 p.m.  Please
be prompt for auditions and ready with your list of conflicts.  If you are
younger than the age-ranges listed, but feel that you can portray older
than you are, please don’t hesitate to audition.



The Ghent Playhouse is an all-volunteer community theater.
