On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, who has
spent years caring for her brilliant, unstable, and now deceased father, must
decide how to move ahead with her own life. This, while dealing with her estranged sister, as well as
the attentions of a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable
work in the chaos the famous mathematician left behind. Over the weekend that follows, a
burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine
into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s genius, or
madness, will she inherit?
Roles available:
Catherine (25) –
Gifted, funny, difficult. Likely the
smartest person in the room, if not the most fragile, she has been increasingly
avoiding coming to terms with all but the basics of day-to-day existence.
Robert (50s) – A scholar, but with a down-to-earth
manner that suggests complete ease in his skin. Warm, affectionate, disintegrating.
Hal (late 20s) – A
former grad student of Robert’s, he is preparing for the life of an academic or
teacher, neither of which much excite him. He has been attracted to Catherine from afar for years.
Claire (late 20s-early
30s) – A professional businesswoman, with everything that implies. Has for years been living some distance
away, geographically and emotionally.
Now wants to reconcile and offer help, regardless of whether either is
welcome.
